Credit Crunch Brunch for Birds
You don't need to be a millionaire to feed birds in your back garden, and at this time of year they're feeling the crunch as much as the rest of us.
On Saturday 25 October, you can bring the whole family down to RSPB Old Moor, Barnsley to celebrate Feed the Birds Day, and take part in fun activities to get you inspired about what you can do for birds in your garden, for next to nothing.
Between 10 am and 3 pm, the reserve will be offering free entry so that visitors can take time to discover the reserve and find out more about tempting wild birds into their garden this autumn.
Activities include designing a budget menu based on scraps from your kitchen, making a messy fat-feeder to take home with you and planting a border for birds in our wildlife garden on the reserve.
Julia Makin visitor officer says: "It's amazing how much of the stuff that we just throw out of the kitchen can be fantastic food for birds. Cooked rice and potatoes are just the job at this time of the year, particularly mashed with added fats, and at no extra cost to us."
"Birds really need feeding at this time of year, and it's so much better to use these kitchen scraps than cheap bird food alternatives. We'll even be showing people what to plant in their garden to feed birds for years to come."
Free entry and no need to book. Everyone is welcome. Call 01226 273837 for more details.
