Great Days Out’ with a difference in Yorkshire South

The annual Great Days Out Fair is a perfect opportunity for Yorkshire South to showcase all the exciting opportunities on offer in the region for group travel organisers looking for new or unique destinations.  At the 2008 event (Reebok Stadium, 02/02/08) Yorkshire South Tourism took the opportunity to introduce over 1000 group travel organisers to some Great Days Out:

Breaking news...This year, one of the country's most exciting exhibitions will be heading to Yorkshire South. From 29 May to 21 September 2008 the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield will play host to the only UK showing outside London of the international tour of the work of Vivienne Westwood, one of the most influential fashion designers of the last 30 years. This major exhibition is brought to Sheffield in partnership with the V&A and will feature more than 150 designs selected from the V&A's collection and Vivienne Westwood's personal archive.

Comprising of Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, Yorkshire South is the perfect region to visit for a great day out with a difference. From world-class attractions and cultural experiences to fantastic shopping and a wide range of accommodation choices to suit every pocket, you'll discover it all in Yorkshire South. And, with the Peak District National Park and Pennines just a stone's throw away, it's also the perfect region to enjoy a breath of fresh air.

Shopping heaven...

For fantastic shopping opportunities, Yorkshire South is just the place. Meadowhall in Sheffield is one of Europe's largest shopping centres where there are over 270 stores of shopping heaven to browse. Bargain hunters visiting the town should head for the Doncaster Markets or the Lakeside Village Outlet, which offers up to 60% off the recommended retail price on a host of famous brands. Or, if you prefer antiques, then the Elsecar Heritage Centre near Barnsley is a must-visit.

Gorgeous gardens...

From the exquisite rose gardens of Doncaster's Brodsworth Hall, to the formal Italianate gardens of Renishaw Hall near Sheffield, Yorkshire South is peppered with greenery. After capturing the nation's imagination in the BBC's ‘Restoration' programme, Wentworth Castle Gardens near Barnsley were rediscovered and opened for the first time in May 2006. Adorned with beautiful collections of flowers, trimmed with woodland and sprinkled with follies, this truly is of Yorkshire's more secret gardens. Or why not visit Sheffield's Botanical Gardens which houses National Collections of Weigela and Diervilla.

Cultural experiences...

Take a trip to Wentworth, a quaint but fascinating historic village north of Rotherham, which is home to a collection of antique shops at Wentworth Forge and traditional Yorkshire pubs serving Wentworth Beer. Alternatively, spend a couple of hours visiting the Clifton Park Museum or journey through the history of the world and come face to face with a woolly rhinoceros at the Weston Park Museum, Sheffield. With four individual galleries all under one roof, Sheffield's Millennium Galleries is an outstanding venue for the visual arts, crafts and design. General admission to the galleries is free, although pre-booked groups of ten or more can enjoy a 10% discount on entry to the Special Exhibition Gallery.

Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham is packed with interactive, hands-on displays exploring everything from the four elements of earth, air, fire and water to the personal lives of families from the UK's steel industry. Outside the experience, Magna is home to Aqua-Tek and Sci-Tek, which are two of the country's largest outdoor play areas. Or if you've an interest in Medieval England, then Conisbrough Castle near Doncaster is a must-see. It's the finest Norman Keep in the UK and pre-booked groups of at least fifteen can benefit from a 45 minute tour with one of our costumed guides, so you can really discover the history and stories behind this magnificent treasure. Alternatively, just five mile north of Doncaster sits Brodsworth Hall - an architectural gem with over 150 years of history to be explored.
