Conference Ambassador reaches for the stars

One of Yorkshire South's Conference Ambassadors was the star of the show after hosting the recent ‘From Taurus to Antennae' event at Sheffield University.

This was the first event to have been brought to the region as a result of the programme, which engages with local academics and businesspeople who are members of societies and organisations and helps them bring conferences and events to the region.

Simon Goodwin, Lecturer in Astronomy at The University of Sheffield, organised and hosted the 5-day conference with direct support from Yorkshire South's Conference team, securing more than £100K worth of economic benefit for the city of Sheffield in the process.

It was the second in a series of conferences on star clusters and delegates came from Argentina, Mexico, the USA, Korea, Japan, China and all over Europe. The first was held in Granada last year.

Simon Goodwin said:

"I was very impressed with the help I got from Yorkshire South and would recommend anybody bringing a conference to the area to become an ambassador - they made my life so much easier and took the strain out of organising external events, hotels and other logistical issues."

Gemma Bradshaw, Ambassador Manager, said:

"We only launched the Ambassador Programme in November last year but we already have 92 Ambassadors. Simon has the honour of being the first to host an event in the city and more are already planned in for the rest of the year. It's particularly satisfying to hear the feedback from the delegates: many had never been to South Yorkshire but they all left with a very positive impression of the region."

Simon is already busy bidding for an exciting large-scale national event for 2011 and is using Yorkshire South's advice and services throughout the process.
