Sheffield hosts national sports conference for first time
The cream of the nation's sporting ambassadors converged on Sheffield for a major national conference.
More than 250 delegates attended the annual English Institute of Sport (EIS) National Conference at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, Sheffield.
Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe MP, Olympic Silver medalist Steve Cram MBE, Olympic Gold medalist Adrian Moorhouse MBE and British Olympic Association (BOA) Director of Elite Performance Sir Clive Woodward were amongst guests at the hotel.
The focus of the conference was on how, while striving to improve our medal ranking from 2004, Britain makes the best use of the opportunities offered by Beijing and the following years leading up to 2012.
The annual two-day workshop, entitled ‘Beijing to London - Maximising impact in the short and long term', also included key addresses from UK Sport Director of Elite Sport Liz Nicholl OBE, Polar Explorer Pen Hadow and British Judo Director of World Class Programmes Margaret Hicks.
Former Olympian Peter Elliott, regional manager for EIS Yorkshire, said: "This was a massively important conference for sport, not just for Sheffield but as a country as a whole."
Jon Broadhurst, General Manager at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, said: "It was a major coup to bring this key national conference, including some of the biggest names in British sport, to Sheffield and our hotel."
